DC Comics has been around for many decades, and that means that they have had a lot of time for their most iconic characters and stories to be adapted in a myriad of forms. In live-action particularly, there have been dozens of DC Comics TV shows and movies that have wowed fans around the world.
Though many DC live-action adaptations are excellent and have pushed the characters and their stories in new and interesting directions, there are also examples of live-action interpretations completely missing the mark and actually disrespecting the iconic source material. Thankfully, this doesn’t happen too often, but when it does, fans are not happy.

Joker Was a Pitiful Shell of His Comic Book Self
Seen In: Joker (2019) and Joker: Folie à Deux (2024)
Todd Phillips’ 2019 Joker film was a smash hit with critics and audiences alike. It garnered acclaim from around the world and was even nominated (and won) several major Academy Awards. Though the film itself is solid enough, the adaptation of the Joker is anything but. Joker and its generally disliked 2024 sequel both barely feel like they’re adapting the DC Comics character.

The Best Batman Villain Isn’t the Joker: It’s Ra’s al Ghul
While Joker may be Batman’s most iconic foe, the Caped Crusader faces rogues who pose a greater threat, namely Ra’s al Ghul.
The movies seem to be using the Joker’s name and iconography solely to entice audiences and fill theaters. It’s a lame angle to take with such an interesting character, and there is so much that a solo Joker movie could have done, but, instead, audiences were given a riff on The King of Comedy mixed with Taxi Driver starring an unrecognizable version of a comic book icon.

Nightwing Was Constantly Out-Of-Character in Live-Action
Seen In: Titans (2018-2023)
Image via Warner Bros.
The Titans TV series is one of the most controversial DC adaptations of the last decade. While it featured excellent costume designs, occasionally compelling characters and story arcs, and enough satisfying violence to keep fans mostly engaged, the series arguably failed in almost every other way.

۱۰ Comics For Fans Who Love Batman and Nightwing’s Relationship
Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson were the original Dynamic Duo, and their familial relationship has only grown over the years as Batman and Nightwing.
One of the biggest problems with Titans was its characterization of its heroes. Dick Grayson, also known as Nightwing, was a notable example of this. Boring, mean-spirited, and confusingly portrayed by actor Brenton Thwaites, the iconic character was absolutely not done justice in this woefully misguided series.

Ozymandias Was Made One-Dimensional On Film
Seen In: Watchmen (2009)
Image via Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures
Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen is one of the greatest comic book stories ever told. It has stood the test of time as one of the very best examples of what the comic book medium can do and achieve, and its biting political commentary and social exploration remain frighteningly relevant today. One of the best aspects of the original Watchmen book is the way it gradually reveals the secrets of its antagonist, Adrian Veidt, also known as Ozymandias.
A brilliant former superhero, Ozymandias is revealed to have been the mastermind behind a series of mysteries throughout the series, and his final plan, a scheme to bring the world together through tragedy, is orchestrated with guilt and remorse for what he feels he must do. In Zack Snyder’s 2009 Watchmen movie, Ozymandias is more overtly villainous, taking away the depth and complexity of his actions. Although the Watchmen movie is generally a fairly faithful adaptation, the character of Ozymandias was significantly altered from his comic counterpart.

Green Arrow Was Unrecognizable for Years in His Own Series
Seen In: Arrow (2012-2020)
Image via The CW
The CW’s roster of DC Comics adaptations actually provided fans with some genuinely great stories and characterizations over the years. Unfortunately, one of the adaptations that didn’t work was one of the biggest ones: Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen, aka Green Arrow, in Arrow. The series itself had its ups and downs, but the central character was practically unrecognizable in relation to his comic counterpart.

۱۰ Comics You Need to Read If You Miss the Arrowverse
After 12 years, the Arrowverse has come to an end, but there’s still hope for fans, as DC Comics has a vast collection of comics worth delving into.
Arrow‘s version of Oliver Queen was a shoddy knockoff of Bruce Wayne, also known as Batman, and some of his most important attributes from the source material were completely absent throughout the entire series. Although Arrow was highly influential in comic book television in the 2010s, it remains a strong example of a DC character’s adaptation that completely missed the mark.

Cassandra Cain Was Given Nothing to Do In Live-Action
Seen In: Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) (2020)
Image via Warner Bros.
Director Cathy Yan’s somewhat forgotten 2020 film, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), is actually quite a lot of fun. It features an excellent lead performance by Margot Robbie as the titular Harley Quinn, and it is packed with some of the best action in the DCEU. Though it has some major highlights, one of the film’s worst aspects is its adaptation of one of the Bat-family’s best members, Cassandra Cain.
In the comics, Cassandra Cain is one of the fiercest fighters in the entire DC Universe, and her connection to Batman and the rest of the Bat-family is incredibly well-articulated and fleshed out. In the film, however, Cassandra is nothing more than a scrappy child who gets caught up in the antics of Harley Quinn and her cohorts, a change that severely disappointed fans, leaving them wondering why the film even bothered to call the character Cassandra Cain when she didn’t resemble the iconic hero from the comics in any meaningful way.

Green Lantern’s Live-Action Debut Killed the Character’s Mainstream Appeal for Years
Seen In: Green Lantern (2011)
Although many movie audiences may disagree, there’s an argument to be made that Ryan Reynolds is one of the most annoying actors working in Hollywood today. Boasting a filmography that’s fairly mediocre when the actor isn’t suited up as Deadpool, Reynolds can be frustrating to watch. One of Reynolds’ worst offenses, of course, is 2011’s Green Lantern.

It’s a one-dimensional, boring iteration of one of DC’s greatest and most compelling heroes, and the poor adaptation has destroyed any mainstream interest in Green Lantern for years.

Lex Luthor Was a Sniveling Tech Bro in Snyder’s Adaptation
Seen In: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
Image via Warner Bros.
Zack Snyder’s live-action DC adaptations are somewhat controversial among comic book fans. There are those who absolutely adore his works, like Man of Steel and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and there are those who fervently loathe them. While opinions are divided on much of his work, most fans agree that a major misfire in his universe was the adaptation of Lex Luthor, Superman’s greatest enemy.

Steel Was Butchered By An NBA Legend
Seen In: Steel (1997)
Image via Warner Bros.
Featured in a film that many die-hard comic book fans have likely forgotten, the character of John Henry Irons, also known as Steel, was woefully portrayed by NBA superstar Shaquille O’Neal. The film is an obvious attempt at making Shaq a big-time movie star, and, despite technically being an adaptation of the classic DC hero, it bears little resemblance to the source material.
Ugly, stupid, and boring, Steel disappointed fans of the iconic Superman supporting character when it was first released, and it has continued to do so to this day. Shaquille O’Neal’s version of John Henry Irons is boring, stiff, and unrecognizable compared to his comic counterpart. Aside from being completely inaccurate to the source material, the film is a terrible mess in its own right.

Catwoman Was Horribly Adapted for Her Own Solo Outing

Image via Warner Bros. Pictures
There have been numerous live-action adaptations of Catwoman over the years, and, for the most part, they have been quite compelling. The version of the character in the iconic ’60s Batman TV series wowed fans, Michelle Pfeiffer’s iteration was an excellent femme fatale in Batman Returns, and both Anne Hathaway and Zoë Kravitz brought modern gravitas to the role in The Dark Knight Rises and The Batman, respectively.

While Batman is considered a more grounded DC hero, his occult cases and adventures could fit in perfectly with a more supernatural DCU.
The worst and most notorious iteration of the feline comic character, however, came in the form of 2004’s Catwoman film. Starring Halle Berry, a performer who is often excellent, in an all-time worst performance, Catwoman spat in the face of the source material, and baffled audiences on top of that. Terrible, stupid, and poorly designed, Catwoman is one of the worst DC movies of all time, and its interpretation of its titular character is utterly baffling.

Mr. Freeze Lost All of His Depth in Favor of Constant Ice Puns
Seen In: Batman & Robin (1997)
Director Joel Schumacher’s 1997 film Batman & Robin is arguably considered one of the worst superhero movies of all time. While that seems terribly unfair, as the film clearly knows what it is doing and is overtly trying to be silly and campy, there are still some major issues with the movie. Even though some aspects of the maligned flick work well, the lead antagonist, Mr. Freeze, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, is terribly adapted from the source material.

۱۰ Things About Batman That Make No Sense
Despite being beloved, Batman as a character is one of DC Comics most illogical and nonsensical heroes, with many facets of his history baffling fans.
A character beloved for his complexity and emotional depth, Mr. Freeze’s live-action iteration has become so iconic for its awfulness that it hasn’t allowed a new interpretation of the character in a major live-action project since. It’s tragic that one of Batman’s best foes remains ruined by a poor adaptation, and hopefully, future live-action projects surrounding the Caped Crusader can redeem the iconic ice-powered villain.
