By the end of the original Pokémon anime, Ash Ketchum, one of the famous Trainers from Pallet Town, has certainly proven himself to be a clever and compassionate Pokémon Trainer. This is truly showcased in his victories during the Masters Eight Tournament, after which Ash was crowned the Monarch of the entire tournament. However, fans cannot help but look back on his earlier battles before the Trainer’s fateful competition in Galar.

In the beginning, Ash had trouble with Pokémon battling, especially when it came to type match-ups. This problem would thankfully begin to dissolve in later regions such as Unova and Kalos, though it would still occur from time to time. Despite this phenomenon, there would also be occasions where, despite the type disadvantage, Ash and his Pokémon would win the battle at hand.

Ash Finds a Way to Defeat Brock’s Onix Using Pikachu

Sprinklers Cause Onix to Be Weak to Electric-type Moves

One of the earliest examples where Ash finds himself at a type disadvantage during a battle is also the period of time when he first gets to know Brock, the Gym Leader of Pewter City Gym and his future traveling partner. Though Ash does not have many Pokémon on his team yet, he is still confident he will do well against Brock and his Rock-type Pokémon. Despite the many Electric-type attacks Pikachu unleashes upon his opponent, none of them appear to affect the Rock Snake Pokémon, as it is a Rock/Ground-type. The giant Pokémon then coils around Pikachu and attacks back, forcing Ash to give up the first match.

After meeting Brock’s father, Ash decides to try and challenge the Gym Leader again. This time, Ash sets up a plan to have the sprinklers in the Gym suddenly go off, thus weakening Onix. Thanks to the water, the Rock Snake Pokemon is now affected by Pikachu’s Electric-type attacks, and is knocked out. In the games, however, this would not work at all, as a Ground-type is usually immune to Electric-type moves.

Oshawott Knocks Out Cilan’s Pansage

Oshawott Wins Despite Being a Water-type

Ash's Oshawott prepares to strike at Cilan's Pansage during battle.

In the Unova region, every new Trainer must soon challenge the Striaton City Gym, hosted by three brothers. As Ash has chosen Oshawott, a Water-type, as his starter Pokémon in Unova, he is assigned to battle the Grass-type Trainer Cilan. Each of the triplets uses one of the three elemental monkey Pokémon, with the calm Pansage acting as Cilan’s own ace. Usually, a Trainer would seek out a Pokemon that would be able to fight against the elemental monkey selected specifically for their match. For example, Ash could have used Pidove, as the Normal/Flying-type would be strong against Pansage’s Grass-type moves.

Oddly enough, Ash chooses to use Oshawott against the elemental monkey, despite its type disadvantage. During the battle, Pansage began to charge a powerful Solar Beam attack, one which left Oshawott petrified. In a twist of fate, the Water-type was not knocked out by the intense Grass-type attack, and retaliated with Razor Shell. Despite the attack being of the Water-type, Pansage was defeated, allowing Ash to win his battle against Cilan.

During his battle against Brycen, the Ice-type Gym Leader of the Unova region, Ash relies on his friend Pignite for help. As Pignite is a Fire/Fighting-type, he does well against the Gym Leader’s roster, until he is defeated by Beartic, Brycen’s ace Pokémon. Without any other ideas, Ash decides to send out Krokorok, a Ground/Dark-type Pokémon. Though Krokorok is still full of fighting spirit, it is also weak to Ice-type moves.

Despite this type disadvantage, Ash still has Krokorok acting as his last Pokémon against the powerful Beartic. However, Ash decides on a new tactic to use in the midst of the match. After Krokorok uses Stone Edge, he has the Ground/Dark-type counterattack using the debris, causing Beartic to faint. This quick thinking is ultimately how Ash was able to defeat Brycen, despite the near loss he faced thanks to Beartic.

The Swift Gliscor Wins Its Battle Against Bastiodon

Fire Fang Is What Defeats the Shield Pokémon in the End

Ash's Gliscor vs. Byron's Bastiodon in Dealing With Defensive Types

During his time in the Sinnoh region, Ash befriends a Gligar who later joins his party. After a while traveling together, Gligar evolves into Gliscor with the help of a Razor Claw in order to save Ash from falling to his demise. Gliscor becomes one of Ash’s best Pokémon in the Sinnoh region, able to battle many other powerful opponents. The Fang Scorpion Pokémon truly becomes an asset during Ash’s battle against Bryon, the Gym Leader of Canalave City and the father of the Oreburgh City Gym Leader Roark.

Ash initally brings out his Chimchar to battle against Bryon’s Bastiodon, the ace of his team. However, Chimchar is soon defeated by the Shield Pokémon, forcing Ash to bring out the newly-evolved Gligar instead. As Gligar is a Flying-type, it is naturally weak against Rock-type moves. Despite this, and the hits the Fang Scorpion Pokémon takes, it uses its swift flying skills to later evade its opponent, and finishes the battle with a powerful Fire Fang attack.

Giovanni is the final and strongest Gym Leader based in the Kanto region, and a Trainer even Gary Oak appears to fear. After all, Giovanni has a new Pokémon in his roster for his challengers to battle, a Pokémon that is not one of his usual Ground-types. This Pokémon is Mewtwo itself, the Genetic Pokémon created by Team Rocket’s scientists using Mew’s DNA. Right after defeating Gary, however, it is heavily implied that something has happened to Mewtwo, causing Giovanni to leave his Gym in the hands of the Team Rocket trio.

When Ash decides to challenge the Viridian Gym, he is surprised to find out that Team Rocket is in charge. During the match, the trio sends out Rhydon, a Ground/Rock-type. Despite the fact that Pidgeotto is weak against Rock-type moves, it is able to evade Rhydon’s attacks with its swiftness and strikes back with Double-Edge. With Pikachu’s help, all of Team Rocket’s Gym Pokémon are sent fleeing.

Ash Sends Pikachu Out to Battle the Ground-Type Mudsdale

Pikachu Manages to Win Despite the Type Disadvantage

In the Alola region, Ash was required to partake in trials instead of Gym Battles in order to collect Z-Crystals and have a chance to become the region’s first-ever Champion. During one such trial, he went up against Hapu, a Ground-type Trainer and an aspiring future kahuna of Poni Island. Hapu is a relatively reserved individual, though she comes to trust Ash and his friends after learning how much they care about the well-being of Pokémon. She is also very knowledgeable about what it means to be a kahuna, as her grandfather was Poni Island’s previous one before his death.

After all, the powerful Pokémon has the Stamina Ability, which increases its Defense whenever it is hit by an attack. Frogadier Defeats Not Just 1, But 2 Grass-Types

Weepinbell & Gogoat Are No Match for Frogadier

Ash's Frogadier battles against Ramos' Gogoat.

Ash’s Greninja remains one of his most popular Pokémon on his team, as it left behind an unforgettable legacy. Even as a Froakie and a Frogadier, the Water-type proved to be an extraordinarily capable fighter in all sorts of battles. In one such battle, Frogadier fought alongside Ash during his match against Ramos, the Gym Leader of Coumarine City Gym. What made this decision so strange, however, was that Ash had his Water-type battle against a roster of Grass-type Pokémon.

Despite the type disadvantage, Frogadier truly showcases how powerful it is, even against a type that is capable of performing supereffective attacks. First, Frogadier goes up against Weepinbell, and despite the opponent’s Poison Powder attack, the Water-type evades it and knocks out the Flycatcher Pokémon. Next, Frogadier is prepared to battle against Ramos’ ace Pokémon Gogoat, who attempts to use a unique Razor Leaf attack. Despite this, Frogadier’s signature swiftness allows it to dodge the leaves, and strikes back with a powerful blow that earns Ash the victory.

Twins Tate and Liza are the Gym Leaders of Mossdeep City, and they both specialize in Psychic-type Pokémon. Their ace Pokémon, the Rock/Psychic-types Solrock and Lunatone, are encountered via a Double Battle during their Gym Battle against Ash and his team. As he is Ash’s most reliable ally, Pikachu is called upon to fight against the two powerful Rock/Psychic-type Pokémon. Instead of choosing a Grass-type or a Water-type, however, Ash chooses to battle alongside Swellow, a Normal/Flying-type.

During this fight, a new, temporary mechanic is created by Pikachu. Using his Electric-type skills, the Mouse Pokémon creates a unique “Thunder Armor” that shields Ash’s team from Solrock and Lunatone. With this new power, they are able to break through the opposing team’s defense, and finish off the two Rock/Psychic-type Pokémon with Aerial Ace and Iron Tail. After this battle, however, Thunder Armor is never seen again, nor is it spoken of.

Ash & Charizard Are Able to Defeat Gary & Blastoise

The Fire/Flying-type Wins His Battle Against the Water-type

Charizard breathing fire on Blastoise while it uses Rapid Spin in Pokémon: The Johto Journeys.

Ash grew up alongside Professor Oak’s grandson, Gary Oak, and they would often discuss their aspirations of becoming Pokémon Masters. However, Gary would often act arrogantly and put down his childhood friend, causing a fierce rivalry between the two to form. Ash would initially try to defeat his rival for the first time alongside Pikachu, but would sadly lose the match against Gary and his clever Eevee. Since that day, Ash has trained even harder, finally meeting up with Gary once more alongside his Charizard.

Unfortunately, Gary sends out his Blastoise, which happens to be a Water-type. Charizard does not back down, nor does Ash decide to switch out the Fire/Flying-type for another Pokémon. Instead, Charizard uses its Flamethrower attack on its opponent, and works with the surrounding steam to launch a sneak attack. Though Blastoise is a fierce fighter to the end, Charizard is able to defeat its rival with a powerful Seismic Toss.
